The R6 Mark III is new, studios are buying it, and the questions are already showing up: "My company recently purchased a Canon R6 III. I am tethering to a Mac laptop. I have EOS Utility 3 installed..." Here's the setup that works.
USB setup
- Quit EOS Utility completely. Having it installed is fine. Having it running is what blocks every other app.
- USB-C data cable straight into the Mac. No hub, no charge-only cable.
- Choose PTP if the camera asks, and turn off phone pairing while tethering.
- Open TETHER STUDIO. The R6 Mark III shows up in the header. Press Space.
WiFi setup
- Activate CCAPI on the camera once.
- Camera: Wireless → WiFi/Bluetooth → Remote shooting.
- Mac: join the camera's own WiFi network. TETHER STUDIO: Connect → WiFi, enter the IP shown on the camera.
Same process as the R5, written out in the Canon R5 guide.
Lightroom and EOS Utility
Lightroom Classic supports the R6 Mark III from version 14.4, wired only, with a Creative Cloud subscription. If yours won't see the camera, check your version first. EOS Utility is Canon's free app. TETHER STUDIO tethers the R6 Mark III over USB and WiFi for $99 once.
Troubleshooting
- Not detected: quit EOS Utility and Image Capture, run killall PTPCamera ptpcamerad, reconnect.
- Won't fire: stills mode, AF can lock, card not full.
- WiFi: right network, VPN off, Local Network allowed in System Settings.

Frequently asked
Can I tether the Canon R6 Mark III to a Mac?
Yes. TETHER STUDIO tethers the EOS R6 Mark III on macOS over USB and WiFi. Lightroom Classic supports it from version 14.4 over USB.
Do I need EOS Utility for the R6 Mark III?
No. TETHER STUDIO connects directly. EOS Utility should be quit before tethering, because it takes exclusive access to the camera.
Why will Lightroom not see my R6 Mark III?
Lightroom Classic needs version 14.4 or later for the R6 Mark III. Also check the USB mode, the cable, and that EOS Utility and Image Capture are not holding the camera.
