EOS Utility is Canon's free app, and for a quick remote shot it's fine. The problems: it's Canon-only, it takes the camera exclusively, and Canon Community has threads like "EOS Utility 3 not working on macOS Sequoia" every time macOS moves.
EOS Utility not working? Try these first
- Check Canon's site for an EOS Utility version that supports your macOS and your camera. New bodies need new versions.
- Quit Image Capture and Photos, then run killall PTPCamera ptpcamerad in Terminal.
- Re-allow EOS Utility in System Settings → Privacy & Security after a macOS update.
- Data cable direct to the Mac. Turn off the camera's WiFi pairing while on USB.

Switching from EOS Utility
You don't have to uninstall it. Just make sure it isn't running (it can auto-launch when you plug in a Canon). Then open TETHER STUDIO and connect. Setup for every Canon body is in Canon tethering on Mac.
Frequently asked
What is the best EOS Utility alternative for Mac?
TETHER STUDIO tethers 200+ Canon bodies on Mac over USB and CCAPI WiFi for $99 once, with AI culling, client view and Art Director Mode. Lightroom Classic and Capture One also tether Canon on subscription.
Why is EOS Utility not working on my Mac?
Common causes are an EOS Utility version that does not support your macOS or camera, macOS ptpcamerad holding the camera, reset privacy permissions after an update, or a charge-only cable.
Can I tether a Canon without EOS Utility?
Yes. TETHER STUDIO, Lightroom Classic and Capture One all tether Canon cameras directly. EOS Utility must be quit first.
