It worked yesterday. You updated macOS last night. Now the camera won't show up. This happens with every major macOS release, in every tethering app. Adobe's forum has a thread for Sequoia, another for Tahoe, and Canon's community has the same for EOS Utility. Here's what to check.

Most common cause: the update reset privacy permissions or brought back macOS grabbing the camera on connect. Re-allow your app in Privacy & Security, set Image Capture to open No application, run killall PTPCamera ptpcamerad, and reconnect.

1. Re-check privacy permissions

System Settings → Privacy & Security. Make sure your tethering app is allowed under Camera, Files and Folders (for the folder it saves to) and Local Network (for WiFi tethering). Quit and reopen the app after changing anything.

2. Stop macOS grabbing the camera

3. Update the tethering app, or check it's been updated

Camera-maker apps sometimes lag behind new macOS releases. EOS Utility on Sequoia is a long Canon Community thread. Check the maker's compatibility page before assuming your camera is broken. If it hasn't been updated yet, a different app is the quickest way back to work.

4. Then the basics

Camera USB mode, data cable direct to the Mac, every other camera app quit. Full list in camera not detected on Mac.

Frequently asked

Why did tethering stop working after I updated macOS?

macOS updates can reset privacy permissions, re-enable macOS claiming cameras on connect, or break tethering apps that have not been updated yet. Re-allow the app in Privacy and Security, run killall PTPCamera ptpcamerad, and check your tethering app is compatible with the new macOS.

Does EOS Utility work on the latest macOS?

Check Canon's compatibility page for your EOS Utility version. Canon Community threads show EOS Utility problems after macOS Sequoia. A third-party tethering app is a quick alternative while you wait.

What macOS does TETHER STUDIO need?

macOS 12 Monterey or newer, on Apple Silicon or Intel.
