NX Tether is Nikon's free tethering app. It captures and transfers, and that's about it. When it, or Lightroom, stops seeing your Nikon, the fixes are usually the same. Adobe's forum still has "Nikon Z8 firmware 2.0 breaks tether in Lightroom," and DPReview has threads about NX Tether after macOS updates.
Nikon tethering fixes
- Camera: Setup → USB → MTP/PTP. After changing it, unplug, power-cycle the camera, reconnect.
- Quit NX Tether, NX Studio, Lightroom, Image Capture and Photos. Then killall PTPCamera ptpcamerad.
- USB-C data cable direct to the Mac.
- Broke after a firmware or software update? Check the maker's bug threads before blaming the cable.
Z8, Z9 and Z6 III over WiFi
On these bodies, WiFi transfers files but won't fire the shutter remotely. That's a Nikon limitation, not your setup. Use USB for tethered capture. USB tethering on the Z8 is very reliable.
