Lightroom crashed on me in the middle of a Nike shoot in December 2025. That's the day I started building TETHER STUDIO. So I know the feeling. Here are the real fixes first, then the alternatives if you're done.
1. Make sure your camera and version are supported
Adobe keeps a tethered camera support list, and it's version-specific. Some examples from that list as of October 2026:
- Sony: 13 bodies from Lightroom Classic 13.3, more from 14.5. 23 Alpha bodies total.
- Canon: EOS R5 Mark II, R6 Mark III and R1 need 14.4 or later.
- Nikon: Z6 III from 14.0, Z50 II from 15.0, Z5 II from 15.1.1.
- Fujifilm: native tethering arrived in 2025. X-T5 and GFX 100 II are listed.
- Panasonic: not on the list.
If your body isn't on it for your version, no setting will fix it.
2. The fixes that work for any tethering app
- Correct USB mode: Sony Remote Shooting / PC Remote (and Save Image Size → Original), Canon PTP, Nikon MTP/PTP, Fujifilm USB Tether Shooting Auto.
- USB-C data cable straight into the Mac, 3 feet or shorter.
- Quit EOS Utility, Imaging Edge, Image Capture, Photos and Bridge.
- Terminal: killall PTPCamera ptpcamerad, then reconnect.
- Restart Lightroom Classic with the camera already connected and on.
Step by step in camera not detected on Mac.
3. Updates that broke it
Adobe's own bug forum has long threads about tethering breaking after updates: Canon tethering after Lightroom Classic 15.4 (June 2026), Nikon Z8 after firmware 2.0, Sony A7 IV after firmware 3.01, and tethering after macOS Sequoia. If it broke right after an update, it's probably the update. Check Adobe's bug threads before you spend an hour on cables.
4. When to stop fighting it
If Lightroom is your catalog, keep it. You don't have to tether in it. Tether in a dedicated app and import into Lightroom afterward. TETHER STUDIO tethers 2,900+ cameras over USB and WiFi, including bodies Adobe doesn't list (the Sony A7R VI and every Panasonic LUMIX), and costs $99 once.
Frequently asked
Why is Lightroom tethering not working on my Mac?
Common causes: the camera is not on Adobe's tethered support list for your Lightroom Classic version, the camera is in the wrong USB mode, another app or macOS ptpcamerad is holding the camera, a charge-only cable, or a recent Lightroom, camera firmware or macOS update.
Does the regular Lightroom app support tethering?
No. Tethered capture is only in Lightroom Classic.
Does Lightroom support Sony tethering?
Lightroom Classic supports 23 Sony Alpha bodies starting from version 13.3, wired only. Newer bodies such as the A7R VI were not on Adobe's list as of October 2026.
What can I use instead of Lightroom for tethering on Mac?
TETHER STUDIO ($99 once, 2,900+ cameras, USB and WiFi), Capture One (subscription), or the camera maker's free app such as EOS Utility or Imaging Edge.
