I've been on commercial sets since 2011, and Sony bodies are on half of them. Somebody always ends up digging through the menus trying to get the camera to talk to the laptop. Sony makes some of the best sensors in the world. Getting them onto a Mac screen shouldn't take a forum thread.
TETHER STUDIO tethers 74 Sony cameras on macOS, from the brand new A7 V, A7R VI and A1 II to the A7 IV, A7R V, FX3, A6700, ZV and RX bodies. It works over USB and over WiFi, handles Mode 300 automatically, and costs $99 once. No subscription, no Creative Cloud, no Imaging Edge.
The whole setup in 76 seconds. Steps written out below.

USB tethering: the setup for any Sony
Same steps on every modern Alpha. The menu names move around a little between bodies, but the settings are the same.
1. Use a real data cable
USB-C to USB-C, straight into the Mac. The cable in the box is fine. Thin charging cables from accessories are not. If a 33MP RAW takes 8+ seconds, your cable is USB 2.0.
2. Tap Remote Shooting
When you plug in, newer bodies (A7 IV, A7R V, A1, A9 III, A6700, FX3) pop up a USB dialog. Tap Remote Shooting. On older bodies, set Menu → Network (or Setup) → USB Connection → PC Remote. Mass Storage and MTP are for copying files. They won't tether.
3. Set Save Image Size to Original
Menu → Network → Remote Shoot Setting → Save Image Size → Original. This is the one everybody misses. Sony ships it set to 2MP, so you shoot a 61MP A7R V frame and get a thumbnail on the Mac. Fix it once and forget it.
4. Choose where files land
Still Img. Save Dest. → PC+Camera writes to your Mac and the card at the same time. That's my default on paid jobs. PC Only skips the card and transfers a little faster.
5. Open TETHER STUDIO and shoot
The camera shows up in the header within a couple of seconds. Press Space to fire. Aperture, shutter and ISO read from the camera and can be set from the Mac.
WiFi tethering: no cable
Sony's WiFi remote runs over HTTP on the camera's own network. TETHER STUDIO talks to it natively, so you don't need Imaging Edge or the Creators' App in the middle.
- On the camera: Menu → Network → Ctrl w/ Smartphone → On. The camera starts its own WiFi network.
- On the Mac: join the network named DIRECT-xxxx:ILCE-xxxx. The password is on the camera screen.
- In TETHER STUDIO: click Connect in the footer, choose WiFi, and it finds the camera.
Honest trade-off: WiFi is slower (about 4 to 6 seconds a frame) and drains the battery faster. Full exposure control from the Mac needs USB. I use USB in the studio and WiFi on location when a cable across the set is a liability.
Mode 300: why some software connects but won't fire
Newer Sony bodies (A7 IV, A7R V, A9 III, A1 and others) use a newer Sony extension of PTP for remote capture, usually called Mode 300. Software that doesn't speak it will show the camera name, maybe even browse the card, and then do nothing when you press capture. If that's happening to you, the problem is the software, not your camera.
TETHER STUDIO detects Mode 300 automatically. I wrote that handler myself because I was the one on set staring at a camera that was connected and wouldn't fire.
Your Sony tethering options on Mac
| Price | Sony coverage | |
|---|---|---|
| TETHER STUDIO | $99 once | 74 bodies, USB and WiFi |
| Lightroom Classic | Creative Cloud subscription | 23 Alpha bodies (v13.3+, older bodies need v14.5+) |
| Capture One | $216/year | Most current Alpha bodies |
| Sony Imaging Edge Desktop | Free | Sony only, separate Remote / Viewer / Edit apps |
Lightroom Classic added Sony tethering in 2024. Adobe's list covers 23 Alpha bodies, so check yours is on it. Adobe's own note says to set PC Save Image Size to Original, which is the same 2MP trap from step 3. The regular Lightroom app (not Classic) has no tethering at all. Full breakdown in TETHER STUDIO vs Lightroom.
Capture One tethers Sony well. It's also a subscription now. I wrote up the numbers in TETHER STUDIO vs Capture One.
Imaging Edge Desktop is free and it works (if it won't connect, see Imaging Edge fixes and alternatives). It's three separate apps stitched together, there's no culling and no client view, and it's Sony only. That's fine until a Canon body walks onto set.
Troubleshooting Sony tethering on Mac
- Camera not detected: confirm Remote Shooting / PC Remote, swap to a data cable, quit Image Capture and Photos. If macOS is still holding the camera, run killall ptpcamerad in Terminal.
- Images arrive at 2MP: Remote Shoot Setting → Save Image Size → Original.
- Connects but won't capture (0x2002): Mode 300 body on software that doesn't support it. Update to the latest TETHER STUDIO.
- Error -105: the USB session is corrupted. Unplug, power-cycle the camera, plug back in.
- Slow transfers: USB-C to USB-C, PC Only save destination, compressed RAW if you don't need uncompressed.

Can I tether a Sony camera to a Mac over WiFi?
Yes. Turn on Ctrl w/ Smartphone in the camera's Network menu, join the camera's DIRECT-xxxx WiFi network from your Mac, then choose WiFi in TETHER STUDIO's Connection Manager. Expect about 4 to 6 seconds per frame. Use USB for full exposure control.
Does Lightroom support Sony tethering?
Lightroom Classic does, since version 13.3 in 2024. Adobe's list covers 23 Sony Alpha bodies and needs a Creative Cloud subscription. The regular Lightroom app has no tethering. TETHER STUDIO covers 74 Sony bodies over USB and WiFi for $99 once.
Is there an Imaging Edge alternative for Mac?
Yes. TETHER STUDIO replaces Imaging Edge Desktop's separate Remote, Viewer and Edit apps with one tethering app, and adds AI culling, Art Director Mode and client view. It also tethers Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and other brands.
Do I need Capture One to tether a Sony?
No. TETHER STUDIO, Lightroom Classic (on supported bodies) and Sony Imaging Edge all tether Sony cameras on Mac. TETHER STUDIO is a $99 one-time purchase instead of an annual subscription.
Why are my tethered Sony images only 2MP?
Sony defaults its remote transfer size to 2MP. Go to Menu, Network, Remote Shoot Setting, Save Image Size, and set it to Original.
