A USB cable across a set is a trip hazard and a leash. On location, on a moving shoot, or when the camera is up on a boom, wireless tethering is worth it. You just need to know what it trades away.

Short version: Turn on the camera's remote/smartphone WiFi, join the camera's own WiFi network from your Mac, and pick WiFi in TETHER STUDIO's Connection Manager. Expect a few seconds per frame. Use USB when speed and full control matter.

Setup by brand

Sony

Works on Sony bodies with WiFi hardware, A7 V, A7R VI and A1 II included. Full guide: Sony tethering on Mac.

Canon

Canon WiFi tethering runs over CCAPI, Canon's camera control API, on supported bodies like the EOS R5, R5 Mark II, R6 and R3. CCAPI is a one-time activation, then you join the camera's own WiFi network (not your studio WiFi). Steps in the Canon tethering guide.

Panasonic

LUMIX bodies with WiFi connect over their own network. See Panasonic LUMIX tethering.

Nikon and Fujifilm

Use USB. Nikon Z8, Z9 and Z6 III only transfer files over WiFi, they can't be fired remotely that way. For Fujifilm, TETHER STUDIO tethers over USB.

WiFi troubleshooting

Does Lightroom tether wirelessly?

Adobe's tethered camera support page only covers wired connections. If you need WiFi, that's one of the reasons people switch.

Frequently asked

Can I tether my camera to a Mac wirelessly?

Yes, on cameras with WiFi remote support. Sony (Ctrl w/ Smartphone), Canon (CCAPI on supported bodies) and Panasonic LUMIX bodies with WiFi can tether wirelessly to TETHER STUDIO on Mac. Nikon Z8, Z9 and Z6 III and Fujifilm cameras should use USB.

Is wireless tethering slower than USB?

Yes. Expect several seconds per RAW file over WiFi versus about 2 to 3 seconds over USB, plus faster battery drain. USB is better in the studio; WiFi is better when a cable is impractical.

Does Lightroom support wireless tethering?

Adobe's Lightroom Classic tethered camera support documentation covers wired connections only.

Why will my camera not connect over WiFi?

Make sure the Mac is on the camera's own WiFi network, any VPN is off, and TETHER STUDIO has Local Network permission in System Settings.
